Team GB are European Champions, claiming both Team and Individual Golds!

26/9/2021

History was made today when British quartet Nicola Wilson, Piggy March, Kitty King and Ros Canter secured the team gold medal in Avenches, adding to the World and Olympic titles already held.

It was a clean sweep on the individual podium, too, with Nicola and Piggy taking gold and silver, and compatriot Sarah Bullimore taking the bronze. It was the seventh time Britain has taken all four medals on offer in 35 editions of the FEI European Eventing Championships.

All six riders on the team received funding support through our "Let's Make a Difference" donation to British Equestrian, which of course was only possible thanks to our members continued support.

Final British individual placings
Gold - Nicola Wilson and JL Dublin, 20.7
Silver - Piggy March and Brookfield Inocent, 23.3
Bronze - Sarah Bullimore and Corouet, 23.6
9th - Kitty King and Vendredi Biats, 28.9
10th - Izzy Taylor and Monkeying Around, 31.9
46th - Ros Canter and Allstar, 77.0

Final full results

BBC 2 is showing a highlights programme on Monday 27 September 15:30–17:15.

Team GB are Olympic Champions

Dear Member,

As I am sure you are aware Team GB won the Team Gold and Individual Silver at the Tokyo Olympics which was a fantastic result and the first time GB have won the team gold since 1972, 6 years before the HTSG was formed.

A special thanks must also go to all the members of the HTSG who have continued supporting us throughout the pandemic.  As you all know, the top group of riders were given invaluable funds from the HTSG in order to receive more training during 2020 and 2021.  This additional funding played a significant part in the campaign for medals in Tokyo and the selected riders certainly produced exceptional performances to win.

The HTSG have also helped to support the extra international events at Bicton and Aston le Walls, where invaluable competitions took place in preparation for the Olympics.

And, it is fabulous to have had Laura Collett (and London 52) as one of our scholars in 2018 and she has continued to be one of our ambassadors since then!

Karen Bartlett, our treasurer, has been involved with the HTSG for too many years to count, and we are all thrilled that her co ownership along with HTSG member Keith Scott of London 52 has made a dream come true!!!

I would also like to thank all our committee members who have worked so hard over the years bringing skill, hard work and invaluable support.

The HTSG would also like to thank all the players who have kindly agreed to play in the Golf Tournament at Naunton raising funds supporting our riders who are now preparing for the European Championships and hopefully another Gold medal.

All the best,

Ginny Elliott
HTSG Chairman

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the sudden death of one of the founding members of the HTSG, Tim Holderness-Roddam on Thursday 15 April 2021, aged 78.

As well as being a founding member of the HTSG in 1978, Tim was also our chairman from 1989 to 2009.

Tim was a passionate and knowledgeable advocate of eventing for many years. He gave his time freely to support, advise and promote the sport, including roles with British Eventing, British Equestrian, and both Blenheim and Burghley Horse Trials. In 2010 Tim was presented with the British Equestrian Federation Medal of Honour in recognition of his outstanding achievement and contribution to the international equestrian world.

Tim was educated at Radley College, followed by military service in the King’s Royal Hussars. His successful 30-year career at Tate & Lyle plc (UM Group) culminated in the role of MD of the United Molasses Group, where he was responsible for the worldwide trading, storage and distribution business.

Since retiring from the City in 2000, Tim held a number of consultancy and non-executive roles, including senior consultant to Bristol Port Company, which handles much of the import/export trade for the west of England; and a consultant to and former director of Abercrombie & Kent, the luxury and tailor-made travel business.

Tim was formerly a trustee of the pension fund of Countrywide Farmers plc and deputy Chair; Chair of the British Equestrian Federation Fund; Chair of Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials; Director and Chair of the Finance Committee of British Eventing; and Deputy Chair of Friends of Conservation, an international charity operating mainly in Africa and the Indian sub-continent.

More recently he has been involved as a Director of British Equestrian; a member of the British Eventing Finance and Commercial Committee; and a member of the Burghley Horse Trials Committee.

Tim was married to Equestrian Olympic Gold Medallist and current British Eventing President, Jane Holderness-Roddam. Together they own West Kington Farms and Stud in Wiltshire, specialising in breeding top competition horses.

Tim will be sorely missed by everyone in the eventing community, where he was a popular and much respected colleague and friend. Our thoughts and best wishes are with his family and friends.

HTSG PLEDGE £20,000 TO "LET'S MAKE A DIFFERENCE" FUND

The Horse Trials Support Group (HTSG) Committee is pleased to announce that we have, for the second year running, made a donation of £20,000 to the “Let’s Make a Difference” fund as agreed with British Equestrian’s Performance Director and Performance Manager for Eventing, Richard Waygood, MBE.

The donation to “Let’s Make a Difference”, raised through the HTSG, has been made to support the training of British riders who are in the running for selection onto the British Teams heading to the Olympics in Tokyo in July, and to the European Championships in Avanches in September.

The HTSG has a well-established partnership with British teams, having been established in 1978 with the specific aims of the aiding and funding training and development of talented riders for Britain's three-day event teams.  This latest donation affirms this relationship and we look forward to seeing British riders develop further thanks to the additional training they will receive thanks the generosity of our members.

We are particularly grateful to the HTSG Members who have continued with their memberships through 2020 and 2021, despite the uncertainty brought about by the global pandemic.

In addition to this donation, we are delighted to have been able to offer some financial support to both Bicton and Aston le Walls International Horse Trials who have stepped in to run much needed 4* competitions this spring following the sad cancellations of both Chatsworth and Bramham.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Horse Trials Support Group (HTSG) for their kind donation towards the CCI4* fixture we are hosting as a Bramham replacement for 2021.

Let’s Make A Difference is doing just that and we are thrilled that this collaboration will provide an opportunity to make a difference to the Sport of Eventing during these challenging times.”

Helen West, Event Organiser, Bicton International Horse Trials.

HTSG Update - April 2020

22/4/2020

Dear All,

We hope that you are all staying safe during this unprecedented and difficult time, and we send our best wishes to those of you who have been affected by the coronavirus.

We are all longing to get back out eventing, but at the moment we do not know what the rest of the season holds for us.

Following the sad cancellation of Badminton a few members have been in contact regarding potential refunds of 2020 subscriptions.  The HTSG Committee will be considering the various options once a decision has been made regarding the running of Burghley Horse Trials, so we appreciate your patience in this matter.  Please note that we have already accounted for VAT on the membership and paid over the donation element to World Class as previously advised.

We will be in touch with you all again in due course, and in the meantime please do take good care of yourselves and your loved ones.

If you can, take a look at the Virtual Eventing competition which is being run to raise funds for NHS Charities Together.

As ever we value the members support greatly, especially at this difficult time.

Best wishes,

HTSG Committee

The HTSG Committee are pleased to announce that we have agreed an exciting new funding donation with Team GBR’s Performance Director and Performance Manager for Eventing, Richard Waygood, MBE.

Titled “Let’s Make a Difference”, a donation of £20,000 raised through the HTSG has been made to support the training of British riders who are in the running for selection onto the British Olympic Team heading to Tokyo 2020.

The two-stage programme will start with each rider receiving a training bursary to be spent on training with elite coaches between now and Long List Selection in May.  Coaching plans will be discussed with Chris Bartle, the Eventing High Performance Coach and Richard Waygood.  The second stage will kick in after Long List Selection and will target the funds to key individuals on the Long List on a bespoke basis.
